CalPERS Medical Benefits
The City of Loma Linda partners with CalPERS to provide medical coverage options for eligible employees and their dependents. Available plans, rates, and coverage details are based on CalPERS plan offerings and regional eligibility.
This page is designed to help you understand your options, compare plans, and confirm eligibility based on your residence.
How to Choose a Health Plan
When selecting a CalPERS medical plan, consider:
-
Your primary care needs and preferred doctors
-
Whether your providers are in-network
-
Monthly cost vs. out-of-pocket expenses
-
Travel or residence outside California
-
Whether you prefer coordinated care (HMO) or flexibility (PPO)
HMO vs. PPO Plans
HMO (Health Maintenance Organization)
-
Services must be received within the HMO network (except emergency)
- Requires a Primary Care Physician (PCP)
-
Referrals are needed to see specialists
-
Lower monthly premiums and predictable costs
-
Best for coordinated, in-network care
PPO (Preferred Provider Organization)
-
Greater flexibility in choosing providers
-
No referral required for specialists
-
Can see out-of-network providers (higher cost)
-
Higher monthly premiums
- You are encouraged to use in-network providers to reduce costs
-
Best for flexibility and provider choice
